RIVERDALE, Iowa–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Alcoa’s EagleCam, located on Alcoa (NYSE:AA) property at its Davenport (Iowa) Works facility, has been named one of the Top 25 most interesting webcams of 2012 by EarthCam.com. The Alcoa EagleCam is perched above a nest home to a pair of bald eagles named Liberty and Justice.
In 2012, the camera was visited more than 12 million times by people from more than 80 countries. “This award recognizes the impact our webcam is having around the world,” said Rob Woodall, Director of Manufacturing at Alcoa’s Davenport Works. “The camera helps educate people on the resurgence eagles are having in this part of the country and highlights our work to protect the environment here in Iowa and everywhere Alcoa operates.”
Alcoa’s EagleCam first went online in early 2011. Since then, Liberty and Justice have produced two sets of eaglets. In 2011 the pair raised a single eaglet in the nest and in 2012 the pair successfully fledged three eaglets. The eaglet fledged in 2011 was named Freedom in an online vote and the three from 2012 were named Faith, Hope and Spirit following a poll where more than 200,000 votes were cast. The pair is expected to lay eggs for 2013 around the second or third week in February and the eggs should hatch in late March.
This is the 14th year EarthCam has named its top 25 list of most interesting webcams. Other webcams named to the list for 2012 included the space jump by Felix Baumgartner (from 128,000 feet above earth), the Costa Concordia Recovery Cam in Italy and the Rockaway Beach Cam in New York. Judges for this year’s competition included TV producers, bloggers and Jim Cantore (meteorologist and storm tracker) from The Weather Channel.
