NEW YORK–Alcoa (NYSE:AA) Reynobond® composite materials played a prominent role
in three award-winning projects in the 2012 Metal Architecture
magazine Metal Building Design Awards, a tour-de-force of metal
composite materials that has been sculpted to create stunning
architectural designs.
The three winning projects are:
-
Grand Prize Winner/Smooth Metal Panels – Chihuahua’s Businessmen
Foundation (FECHAC) Regional Office in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Four, 40-foot high pillars on the primary façade are clad in
tessellated Reynobond Aluminum Composite Material (ACM). With the
mosaic-like pattern of the panels, the facade looks different
throughout the day as daylight hits at different angles, intensity and
color. -
Sustainable Design Winner – Student Center at Monterrey Technical
University in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, uses Reynobond ACM
panels to frame the cover of the entry plaza. Reynobond ACM, which
contains a high percentage of recycled content, makes it ideal for
projects such as this that are designed to LEED® green building
principles.; and -
Judges Award – The Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative
Arts at Brown University. The building envelope contains both
Alcoa’s Reynobond zinc and aluminum composite material panels, which
provide structure, texture and color that forces the eye to follow the
lines across the building to a vanishing point.
The projects were judged on their overall appearance, innovative use of
metal and the significance of metal to achieve the project objectives.
Metal must be the primary material used on the projects.
“Each of these projects is a superb example of the creative use of
Alcoa’s Reynobond composite materials as a primary architectural
element,” said George Rosado, Commercial Director for Alcoa
Architectural Products. “Today, architects are limited only by their
imaginations. Reynobond composite materials provide an extremely
versatile palette to work with that is further enhanced by brilliant
color options, extreme durability and a 30-year finish warranty with our
Colorweld® 500 finish.”
Grand Prize Winner
The FECHAC Regional Office, which took top honors, was designed by
architectural firm Grupo ARKHOS of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
“The choice of material was essential to the success of the project,”
said Rubén Escobar Urrutia, LEED AP, Director General of Grupo ARKHOS.
“The brightness of the metallic color and the way in which it reflects
the desert sun plays an important role in defining the building’s image.
We had to be confident that the material would retain its flatness after
it was folded, that the folds would be crisp and that the quality of the
finish and color would be consistent throughout the panels. Durability
was also an essential attribute. We expect the FECHAC building to look
pristine 35 years from now, with minimal maintenance. Reynobond was the
natural choice.”
